Moderna Museet | Stockholm
Skeppsholmen
September 1, 2017–January 14, 2018
Curated by Jo Widoff
Nevelson had been working seriously as an artist for more than thirty years before she received significant recognition; too often, however, this belated appreciation took the form of hagiographya mythifying focus on her outsize life story and decidedly flamboyant self-presentation. This concise show of nineteen worksthe first major presentation of the artist in the Nordic region in nearly forty-five yearspromises to return attention to Nevelson’s stunning art itself. The exhibition comprises her signature monumental black or white wood reliefs, a selection of paintings, and a wide offering of her lesser-known collages and works on paper. A major catalogue, with texts by Moderna Museet director Daniel Birnbaum, codirector Ann-Sofi Noring, critic Frans Josef Petersson, and Nevelson herself, accompanies the show.
