“ROSA BARBA: SEND ME SKY”
Remai Modern
950 Spadina Crescent East
September 28, 2018–January 20, 2019
Curated by Sandra Guimarães
Rosa Barba searches for deep time in the age of the instant. She finds it in the sculptural materiality of film itself, but also in vaults, archives, buried stores of radioactive waste—and the cosmos. “Send Me Sky” thematizes astronomy and cinema, positing both as matters of light and time. A new commission filmed at the Harvard College Observatory in Cambridge, Massachusetts, will be accompanied by a selection of recent works, including The Color Out of Space, 2015, comprising images shot at the Hirsch Observatory in Troy, New York, projected through colored glass, and Sight Enables Us to Appreciate Distance, 2013/2016, a text piece made on 70-mm film that takes its title from the writing of mathematician Henri Poincaré. The exhibition will be complemented by a new edition of Barba’s ongoing project Printed Cinema, 2004–, which is less a catalogue than a work extending the artist’s reconfiguration of the cinematic apparatus into the domain of publication.
