  • “DANIEL STEEGMANN MANGRANÉ: A LEAF-SHAPED ANIMAL DRAWS THE HAND”

    Pirelli HangarBicocca
    Via Chiese 2
    September 12, 2019–January 19, 2020

Curated by Lucia Aspesi and Fiammetta Griccioli

Daniel Steegmann Mangrané’s work traces the boundaries between the natural and the artificial, the human and the animal. This survey of the Catalan artist’s oeuvre will present almost two dozen of his key pieces from the past twenty years, many of which were inspired by the Brazilian avant-garde of the 1960s and ’70s. In Elegancia y renuncia (Elegance and Resignation), 2011, for example, he inscribes geometric shapes onto a dried leaf through which light is projected. The HangarBicocca’s vast exhibition spaces will be partitioned by transparent fabric screens, echoing the works’ explorations of materials and perception. Of particular interest will be the ongoing series “Lichtzwang,” 1998–, a metawork consisting of more than 250 watercolors that provide insight into Mangrané’s creative process. A persistent theme: Living things aren’t, entirely, and dead things aren’t quite gone either.
