After moving to France to study semiotics in the 1970s, Soungui Kim began making art that weaved Taoist and Buddhist thought together with Western art theory and visual culture. MMCA Seoul will present Kim’s first major retrospective as a two-part exhibition: The first will show her recent work, including her latest multi-media performance, Time Space, 2019, in which an AI robot designed in collaboration with several Korean media and sound artists will paint and read one of Kim’s poems. The second part will be a comprehensive survey of five decades of the artist’s videos, drawings, photography, collages, and more, featuring a large audiovisual archive that includes Kim’s correspondence and experimental collaborations with contemporary artists and thinkers such as John Cage, Jean-Luc Nancy, and Nam June Paik.
