    Eleven serious new paintings by Anthea Mawby are being shown at the Johnson Gallery in Albuquerque. The colors are predominantly somber greens and browns. Value changes are slight and the colors restrained and subtle. In this environment, pale greyish pastels take on surprising intensity which can be seen either as the germ from which they grow or the vortex into which they dissapear. The paintings are brooding and impenetrable. In contrast, two small watercolor sketches in the same show are light and directly painted but have the same tentative quality which seems to characterize her work.
