This small but timely exhibition focused on Nancy Graves’ sculpture, painting, and drawing from 1980 to1985. Although Graves’ work has achieved blue-chip status on the open market, it seems that its formal accomplishments remain overlooked. While her art isn’t exactly taken for granted, it also seems fair to say that it hasn’t really received its critical due. I say this because I feel that her recent metal sculptures evolve out of David Smith’s work in a way that, among other things, necessitates a reexamination of the latter’s work, a reevaluation of recent Modernist sculpture on the whole,
