“Heimat” is one of those German words that cannot be translated without losing some of its meaning. It refers to home as well as to homeland, in geographical terms but also in a psychological sense—as our feeling of belonging to a particular place. “Heimat” belongs to our inner landscape, and it is a feeling that cannot be shared with others nor can it be adopted later, the way we adopt other cultures, for example.
