Long associated with luminous, symbolically loaded abstract canvases, Domingo Barreres takes the human figure and flowers as the subject of his most recent paintings. Raised in Spain in the ’40s and ’50s, the artist remains committed to the iconic imagery and baroque lighting of his youth. However, in these bold poetic canvases the aesthetic Neoplatonism of earlier works is replaced by corporeal, often homoerotic fantasy: Expressionist surfaces, composed of heavy black tar and plaster and sealed with epoxy, replace the floating ethereal surfaces of earlier works, and images of Athena, Madonnas,
