Yes, very unfashionable. 1500 looky-loos? Give me a break.

Re: Role Call

by Jareth (05.19.05 12:29 pm)

every been to a ren fair, also chabby chic... quite fashionable really nother example of “ironic slumming”

Re: Role Call

by marker2000 (05.19.05 01:04 pm)

“Ironic slumming” is not fashionable. Maybe for those who gave up or those just getting to the 90's. Or is that now retro? So sheepish.

Re: Role Call

by Jareth (05.19.05 01:13 pm)

ironic slumming is always fashionable, it just comes under diff. names - and places. some people are just incapable of coming up with there own content.

Goes both ways don't it?

I talked to this lady at the Armory Show.

I asked her if she didnt think this contributed to a bunker mentality in the art world.

She said no, art needs to be defended.

Musings from one of our correspondents

The Cassandra Report® features uncensored Lifestyle Reports written by a few of our correspondents. The following is an excerpt from a report written by an 18-year-old female high school senior in New York City for the April 2005 Cassandra Report®:

A few years ago I would have said that my generation’s defining characteristic would be apathy. While I’m still afraid of what lurks out there in suburbia, at least I can say that that idea has been seriously challenged here at home. While there’s a definite indifference prevalent even in [my high school’s] classrooms (my Psychology teacher remarked that I knew a lot about Medicaid coverage of abortion in this country to which I told her I make it my job to know about the rights that our government is taking away from us.) However, there is also restlessness. We need leaders to focus our energy. Right now there are all these really smart, inspired kids, who know that they don’t want anything to do with the hypocrisy of their parents or the government or Wall Street, so they turn to drugs and bluegrass music. I’m confident in my generation’s potential, if some sort of alternative was provided. If some sort of artist coalition came out and showed us that we’re not simply putting off the inevitable sale of our soul. After telling my parents’ friends that I want to be a writer, I want to stop hearing the response, “No, but what are you going to do?” I want to stop seeing girls who are a size ten, wearing a size four, because they say it makes them look thinner. I want to stop seeing jeans with zippers up the butt. I want to stop seeing two hands go up in my English class when I ask, “Who here has read Catcher in the Rye?” I want all the guys in my high school to stop cheating on their girlfriends. I want “liberal” to be a compliment again. I want to see drive, desire, and determination. That will be my generation.

Busch-Reisinger Museum

“'As though my body were naught but ciphers': Crises of Representation in Fin-de-Sičcle Vienna” focuses on the parallel crises that took place in visual and verbal representation in Vienna around the turn of the 20th century. Concentrating on the themes of decoration, abstraction, and the feminine, this installation presents works on paper, illustrated books, and textile samples by artists such as Gustav Klimt and Josef Hoffmann alongside early editions of key publications by Nietzsche, Freud, and others. (Yawn)

Fogg Museum

“From Mind, Heart, and Hand: Persian, Turkish, and Indian Drawings from the Stuart Cary Welch Collection” is one of a few major exhibitions ever to focus exclusively upon drawings from South Asia and the Middle East, a rich but understudied field of both Indian and Islamic art. The exhibition features works distinguished by their beauty and historical significance. (Really Hot!)

“To Students of Art and Lovers of Beauty: Highlights from the Collection of Grenville L. Winthrop” will present nearly 100 paintings and sculptures, some of which have just returned from an international tour. The salon-style installation will focus on Winthrop's extraordinary holdings of 19th century French, British, and American art, including works by Blake, David, Degas, Gericault, Ingres, Monet, Pissaro, Renoir, Rodin, Rossetti, Sargent, and Whistler. (Some hot Gustave Moreau, Barye and Blake here)

Sackler Museum

“The Sport of Kings: Art of the Hunt in Iran and India” presents paintings, ceramics, decorative arts, and weaponry - most 200-500 years old - exploring the rich traditions of the hunt in West and South Asia. (Totally hot falcons, white elephants and lions, all exquisitely crafted esp shield made of buffalo hide, wow))
