Has Carroll Dunham lost it? I mean you know an artist has made it when they become a mannerist of their own practice, but Dunham is really pushing it farther than most. The sexy amoebas were just about to announce him as a standout colorist. We loved you then. Those paintings were erotic. We watched with nervous anticipation when it looked like all you got out of that work was that it had cartoon-like potential, hoping you would play that card closer to your chest, but you went all in with that hand. Why? Now it’s a stylized graphic of a stylized cartoon of a painting. What happened, man? When did you trade life in for transcendental object love?
Isn't a drag when your heros let you down?
AND what's with this phenomenon: an artist makes one good work and never anything great after that but their career and art prices go crazy for the next 20 years??
