Carl Andre talks about his life and work
Carl Andre is, indisputably, one of Minimalism’s most preeminent forebears. His current retrospective at the Hamburger Bahnhof in Berlin, “Carl Andre: Sculpture as Place, 1958-2010,” which also happens to be the largest solo exhibition of the artist’s works to date, is on view through September 18, 2016. Andre, whose poetry made the cover of the summer 2013 issue of Artforum, talks about his storied career, and coming to New York in the 1950s during a recession when the city was a fecund bohemia for artists of all stripes because it wasn’t, in his own words, “the Promised Land anymore.”
