Jason Moran on his life and music

Widely known and celebrated as a jazz musician, composer, and improviser, Jason Moran also produces drawings, sculptures, and installations, expanding the forms of his ongoing inquiries regarding the natures of sound and silence, history and presence. He is also a prolific collaborator, creating with, for, and alongside luminaries such as Glenn Ligon, Kara Walker, Joan Jonas, Lorna Simpson, Carrie Mae Weems. On the occasion of his first solo exhibition—which runs until January 5, 2020, at New York’s Whitney Museum of American Art and comprises both his works-do-date as well as live musical performances—Moran talks about the many registers of his singular artistic practice.
