Mierle Laderman Ukeles talks about Maintenance Art

“Mierle Laderman Ukeles: Maintenance Art,” on view at the Queens Museum through February 19, 2017, is the first survey of this major Conceptualist’s work in the United States. Organized by the museum’s Larissa Harris and guest co-curator Patricia C. Phillips, this exhibition spans fifty years of the artist’s thinking and production. Here, Ukeles talks to artforum.com about freedom, feminism, crisis, and care—some of the ideas that led Ukeles to designating herself a “maintenance artist.”
